What goes wrong ## What it costs to leave it The faults and shortcuts we are called out to correct most often, and what they end up costing. ### The stack parked in the doorway A vertical blind stacked on the wrong side turns the door you use most into an obstacle: you push the louvres aside every time you go out, they catch on the handle, and within a year the leading carriers are worn and the louvres are creased. It is decided at survey and cannot be reversed without re-fitting. ### Louvres left to drag on the floor Louvres cut too long drag on carpet or tile, so the bottom edge frays, the weights knock and the chain links pull out. Best where the door opens to one end and there is a clear return wall to park against. - Split stack (centre open): louvres divide and gather at both ends. The standard for French doors and for sliding doors where the middle is the walkway. - Multiple tracks across a bay: each section runs independently so nothing collides at the corners and each pane can be angled separately. - Wand or cord operation: a wand is tidier and popular in homes; cord and chain suits wide commercial runs. - Recess or face-fixed: face-fixing over the opening clears deep sills and handles, and gives better coverage at the edges. ### Fabrics, louvre widths and hardware Louvre width changes the character of a wide window: a wider louvre reads calmer and stacks more compactly, a narrower one gives a finer texture across the glass.
