What goes wrong ## What it costs to leave it The faults and shortcuts we are called out to correct most often, and what they end up costing. ### Real wood in the wrong room warps Timber slats in a bathroom, above a sink or in a conservatory absorb moisture and heat unevenly. They bow, twist and stop closing flat, and once a slat has moved it does not come back. Faux-wood exists precisely for these rooms and costs less. ### Over-scaled slats spoil a small window A wide slat looks confident on a tall sash and clumsy on a small pane, where you end up with a handful of heavy louvres and very little glass. This is set at manufacture and cannot be adjusted afterwards. ### Bent slats spread One kinked slat catches on the next, and the ladder tape starts to twist. In detail ## Venetian Blinds: materials, methods and variations The detail behind the quotation: what we specify, why, and how it changes room by room. ### Wood, faux-wood or aluminium The three materials are not interchangeable, and choosing correctly is what keeps a Venetian looking right in five years. Real wood is the warmest option and the one that reads as furniture. Grain shows through a stain, it takes a heritage colour beautifully, and it is lighter than people expect. It belongs in living rooms, bedrooms, studies and hallways, anywhere dry. Faux-wood carries the timber look but is unaffected by steam, splashes and heat. In kitchens, bathrooms, en-suites, utility rooms and conservatories it is the correct specification, not the compromise. It is also easier to wipe clean above a hob. Aluminium gives the slimmest slat and the crispest, most contemporary line, with a wide colour range including metallics. It is the usual choice in offices and modern apartments, and the narrowest widths suit small windows and tight reveals. ### Slat widths, stack height and operation Slat width changes both the look and the mechanics. Narrow slats suit small panes and period windows and stack shorter at the top, which matters on a shallow reveal. Wider slats give a bolder, more contemporary look, admit more light when open and give a slightly cleaner view out, but they stack deeper, so a tall window handles them better than a short one. - Tilt by cord, wand or motor, with the side chosen so you are not reaching over a worktop or a radiator. - Lift cords with child-safe devices fitted as standard. - Ladder tape as an alternative to cords, giving a decorative band down the slats and hiding the cord holes. - Headrail and bracket specification scaled to width so wide blinds do not bow in the middle. - Motorised tilt and lift for high, wide or hard-to-reach windows. ### Rooms, window types and where Venetians beat the alternatives Venetians are the strongest choice wherever the problem is directional light rather than total coverage: home offices with monitors, kitchens with a low afternoon sun across the worktop, front rooms with a pavement close to the glass, and bathrooms where privacy is needed but darkness is not. They also sit well in bays, with each pane treated separately, and on tilt-and-turn windows where a slim headrail clears the opening sash. Where they are less suitable is wide patio doors and sliders: a very wide Venetian is heavy and awkward, and vertical or Perfect Fit blinds are the better mechanical answer.
