What goes wrong ## What it costs to leave it The faults and shortcuts we are called out to correct most often, and what they end up costing. ### A stock blind trimmed to fit is a permanent compromise Cutting a roller down removes the factory edge and the sizing relationship between tube, fabric and brackets. The result runs off-square, tracks to one side over time and lets daylight past on both edges, which in a bedroom is precisely the problem you bought it to solve. ### The wrong fabric in a wet room discolours Non-moisture-tolerant fabric in a bathroom or above a hob absorbs steam and cooking residue. It stains along the top where the roll sits and along the bottom bar, and unlike a wipeable fabric it cannot be cleaned back. ### Cheap spring mechanisms give up A blind operated several times a day in a kitchen is a mechanical component under real duty. Under-specified springs and thin tubes start slipping, then stop holding position at all, and the blind spends its last months permanently half open. ### Living with glare and heat for another season Rooms behind unshaded glass overheat, screens become unreadable at certain hours and flooring fades in the shape of the sunlight. In detail ## Roller Blinds: materials, methods and variations The detail behind the quotation: what we specify, why, and how it changes room by room. ### Fabric types explained Almost every roller blind decision comes down to which fabric goes where. - Blackout: blocks light through the cloth. Bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms. - Dim-out: softens and darkens without full blackout. Living and dining rooms. - Screen and sunscreen: cuts glare and UV while keeping the outward view. Home offices and rooms facing a garden. - Voile and translucent: privacy with maximum daylight. Front rooms and hallways. - Day-and-night (banded): alternating stripes let you switch between view and privacy as you raise the blind. - Moisture-tolerant and wipeable PVC-faced fabrics: kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms. - Thermal and reflective backings: conservatories and large south-facing glazing where heat is the main problem. ### Fitting positions, light gaps and hardware Where the blind sits decides how much light escapes around it. Inside the recess gives the neatest appearance and the flattest look against the glass. Fitted above and over the recess, the fabric overlaps the plaster on all sides and gives the closest thing to genuine blackout, the right call in a bedroom, even though it is slightly less discreet. Face-fixing to a deep uPVC frame suits new builds and apartments and keeps the sill clear. Hardware follows size. Wider and longer blinds need a larger tube so the fabric does not deflect and a bracket specification that holds it square. Bottom bars can be exposed for a contemporary look or wrapped in fabric to disappear. Controls come as a side chain with a child-safe device fitted as standard, a spring mechanism, or a motor. ### Where roller blinds are the right and wrong choice Rollers excel on standard rectangular windows, above worktops, in bathrooms, on shallow sills and anywhere a slim profile matters. They also work well doubled up in a bay, with each pane treated separately. They are the wrong choice on wide patio doors and sliders, where a single sheet of fabric is unwieldy and vertical or Perfect Fit blinds stack more sensibly, and on windows where you want to tilt for glare rather than raise and lower, which is a Venetian job.
