Fit verticals throughout and the small bathroom window looks industrial. The default for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms: blackout, dim-out, patterned or day-and-night. - Roman blinds: soft folded fabric with the warmth of a curtain and the neatness of a blind. Blackout fabric blocks light through the cloth itself and belongs in bedrooms and nurseries. Dim-out softens a room without darkening it and suits living rooms and dining rooms. Screen and voile fabrics keep the view and cut glare, which is what a home office usually wants. Day-and-night banded fabric switches between privacy and view as you raise it, which works well in front rooms facing a street. Fabric choice also has to survive the room. Kitchens and bathrooms need moisture-tolerant, wipeable fabrics: anything else absorbs steam and cooking residue and discolours along the top edge. Conservatories add heat and heavy UV, where thermal and reflective backings earn their money.
