What goes wrong ## What it costs to leave it The faults and shortcuts we are called out to correct most often, and what they end up costing. ### Badly fixed awnings pull out of the wall A three-metre projection loaded by wind exerts far more force on its brackets than its own weight suggests. Fixed into soft brick, thin render or a poorly chosen anchor, the failure is not gradual: it takes masonry with it, and it happens on the windiest day of the year when nobody is watching. ### Water ponding wrecks the fabric Too shallow a pitch lets rain collect instead of running off. The weight stretches the fabric, distorts the arms and forces the motor or gearing to work against a load it was never rated for. Most prematurely dead awnings died this way. ### Leaving it rolled up wet Retracting a soaked awning and forgetting it for a fortnight is how mildew marks appear, and they do not wash out. This is a maintenance point, not a fault, and we cover it at handover. ### The season passes while you decide Awnings are made to order and fitted around weather. Our process ## Five steps from first call to handover No surprises, no pressure and nothing ordered until you have approved the written quotation. - Step 1 ### Free site visit We look at the elevation, check the substrate and the fixing height, and talk through how you actually use the space: table, seating, doorway clearance, shopfront signage. - Step 2 ### Measure and specify Width, projection, pitch and mounting position are set out, along with obstructions to work around and the operation type: manual crank or motorised. - Step 3 ### Written quotation A clear written quotation covering unit, fabric, fixings and installation. Nothing is ordered until you approve it, and the agreed figure is what you pay. - Step 4 ### Installation Brackets are fixed to the substrate to the specification agreed, the unit is hung and levelled, and the pitch is set so water runs off rather than collecting. - Step 5 ### Testing, handover and aftercare We run the awning fully out and fully in, check the pitch and the arm tension, tidy and remove our waste, and explain safe operating limits and care. Servicing and repairs afterwards are handled by us. In detail ## Awnings: materials, methods and variations The detail behind the quotation: what we specify, why, and how it changes room by room. ### Types of awning and where each belongs The right type is decided by the wall, the space and how often you want to think about it. - Folding-arm patio awnings: the standard choice over a patio or decking, projecting from the wall with no ground supports to trip over. - Cassette and semi-cassette units: the fabric and arms fold into a housing when retracted, protecting them from weather and dirt, worth it on an exposed elevation. - Motorised awnings: operated by remote or switch, the sensible option on wide units and shopfronts where a crank becomes a chore. - Manual crank awnings: simple, no power supply needed, and completely dependable on smaller domestic widths. - Shopfront and commercial awnings: sized to the frontage, planned around signage and lighting, and specified for daily operation. - Balcony and terrace installations: where fixing options are limited and clearances have to be checked carefully. ### Fabrics, frames and fixings Awning fabric works hard: constant UV, wind loading and repeated folding. We specify hard-wearing, weather-resistant acrylic-type fabrics with good colour retention rather than the cheapest cloth that fits the frame, because a fabric that fades or goes brittle takes the whole unit out of use. Frames and arms are chosen against width and projection. A wide unit with a long projection puts real load through its arms and brackets, and the bracket count and fixing type follow from the substrate: solid brick, blockwork, rendered insulation and timber all behave differently under a pull-out load. This is the part of the specification customers never see and installers never skip. Pitch is set on site. Enough fall that water runs off, without dropping the front bar so low it interferes with a doorway or a view. On shopfronts we also check clearance over the pavement and around signage before fixing anything. ### Residential and commercial differences Domestic awnings are used in bursts, weekends, holidays, an evening meal outside, and the priorities are shade over the table, ease of operation and a colour that suits the house. Commercial awnings are opened every trading morning and closed every night, so operation speed, motorisation, robustness and appearance under constant public view all move up the list, along with clearances over a footway. For cafés and shops an awning also does a job no internal solution can: it defines the frontage, shades the display, keeps customers seated outside a little longer and makes the premises legible from down the street. ### Repairs, servicing and getting more life out of what you have Not every awning problem needs a new awning. Stiff operation, an arm that no longer pulls square, a motor that hums without moving, torn or mildewed fabric, a unit that will not fully retract: these are individual faults with individual fixes. We assess, explain honestly whether repair is economic, and quote before doing anything. Where a unit is genuinely beyond sensible repair, or the part is obsolete, we say so and price a like-for-like replacement instead. How long should an awning last?+Life expectancy depends far more on use and care than on age: retracting it in high wind, letting it dry before rolling it away and having it serviced when the operation stiffens are what extend it.
